Journey into the Maya Underworld: The ATM Cave Expedition

ATM Caves

Echoes of the Ancients - Beyond Time!

Prepare for one of Belize’s most awe-inspiring and unforgettable adventures — the legendary Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave!
Named the #1 Sacred Cave in the World by National Geographic, the ATM is far more than a cave — it’s a journey deep into the mystical heart of the ancient Maya world, where history, archaeology, and adventure intertwine in a way unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Your expedition begins with a scenic drive through the majestic Maya Mountains to the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. From there, you’ll embark on a 45-minute rainforest trek, crossing three jungle rivers and surrounded by vibrant flora, towering trees, and the calls of tropical birds and howler monkeys echoing in the distance.

Upon reaching the cave’s entrance — a dramatic limestone opening hidden in the jungle — your guide will prepare you to enter the subterranean world of the Maya underworld, known as Xibalba. Inside, you’ll swim, wade, and climb through crystal-clear waters and winding limestone chambers illuminated only by headlamps and the shimmer of mineral formations.

As you explore, your licensed archaeological guide will share fascinating insights into the cave’s geology and its sacred role in Maya rituals. Deeper inside, the chambers reveal ancient artifacts left untouched for over a thousand years — ceremonial pottery, tools, and skeletal remains used in offerings to the gods. The highlight of the experience is meeting the “Crystal Maiden,” a young sacrificial victim whose calcified bones sparkle eerily beneath your light, a hauntingly beautiful testament to Maya spirituality.

Few places on Earth allow you to step so vividly into the past — to see and feel the untouched remnants of an ancient civilization in their original setting.

After exiting the cave, you’ll enjoy a hearty Belizean lunch surrounded by nature before heading back to Hopkins, carrying with you memories of a journey that defies time itself.

Note: This tour requires a moderate level of fitness, involves swimming and climbing, and has a minimum height requirement of 40 inches.
